Marina Abramović: A Montenegrin-Heritage Icon of Performance Art

Marina Abramović, one of the world’s most influential visual and performance artists, was born in 1946 in Belgrade to a family of Montenegrin heritage. Her parents, Danica and Vojo Abramović, were Yugoslav partisans and prominent members of the resistance movement during World War II.

Her provocative and deeply personal work has shaped global contemporary art. From early experiments in Belgrade, through her collaboration with Ulay, to landmark performances like “The Artist Is Present” at MoMA in New York, Marina has bridged East and West, tradition and modernity, pain and transcendence.
